The BJP’s election manifesto for Uttar Pradesh promised creation of anti-romeo squads in the state and it was the one of the several decisions that Yogi Adityanath took as soon as he took oath as the Chief Minister. Even though the government promised that the officers in the squads will be trained to ensure effective use of the teams, the public is already questioning the methods of the UP government.
According to some media reports, the anti-romeo squads are being used by some of the UP cops who are allegedly harassing innocent people. Why? For money. Well, yes, you read it right. An incident from Rampur, UP was recently highlighted after the victim came out in the open and alleged that some of the cops harassed him and his niece, and then demanded bribe to let them go.
Two UP cops detained a man and his niece while they were passing through Atariya Chowk on Monday. Even though they kept saying that they were related, the c ops took them to the police station, and harassed them by keeping them in the station for 5 hours.
Later, when the cops called their family and it was proved that they were, in fact were related, the cops demanded a bribe of Rs 10000 to release them. Finally, they released them after they gave them Rs 5000. The family of the victims recorded the entire incident, and the victim, later, passed on the footage to a journalist.
The cops have been suspended after initial investigation. Listen to what the victim had to say about the incident –
What’s happening, Mr Adityanath?
