We all know about the anti-romeo squads started by the Uttar Pradesh government as soon as Yogi Adityanath took oath as the Chief Minister of the state. While the move was lauded at first, the problems within the system soon started to surface, and the move was questioned. But what has been revealed now, will completely shock you.
Apparently, Uttar Pradesh’s anti-romeo squads are not only harassing people but also implicating innocent people in the name of protecting women from molesters on the streets. In a sting operation done by India Today Group, it was revealed that the squads have proved to be counterproductive, with some officers even misusing it for extortion. Yes, you read it right.
We bet you’ve heard these things before, but what you will hear in the sting video straight from the officers in charge of the anti-romoe squads, will leave you thinking about where our country is going.
India Today TV investigation reports showed how police have set their bribes to have an innocent man rounded up for NO crime. Reporters went to different police officials, and asked them how exactly can they round up a man for a crime.
In Meerut’s Transport Nagar, let’s start with sub-inspector Onkar Nath Pandey, who is the local head of an anti-romeo squad. He was caught on camera, saying that it’s very easy to implicate any man and put him in jail. He said –
‘What I am saying is he should have a companion first (on the street). Even if that’s a man. Take him into confidence. Let there be a scuffle after drinks. Let that man provoke him (your rival). He’d lose his senses. Then call the police who will pick him up. He’ll be prosecuted… Definitely, he’ll go to jail. We’ll frame him in a weapons’ case and he’ll be imprisoned.’
He demanded Rs 50,000 for doing this job.
Another head of an anti-romeo squad in Bulandshahr, Sub-Inspector Vineet Verma said that they just needed to send him the picture of the target on WhatsApp and that he needed no written complaint, while his counterpart in Agra said that they will frame the guy in an unresolved case of rioting. He said –
‘Police were attacked near Haweli Garib Khan. A lot of stone-pelting also happened. A case is registered against 150 people in the rioting,” he recalled. “We will have warrants issued for him from a magistrate court. The day he arrives here, let us know. We’ll take the warrants and put him in. He will be named in the FIR against 150 unknown people.’

Well, after the report was aired, Uttar Pradesh DGP Sulkhan Singh asked for a report on the same.
