Home Minister Rajnath Singh, on Thursday, was at an event where he honoured several jawans for their bravery. One of them was BSF constable Godhraj Meena. Rajnath Singh broke protocol and hugged the BSF jawan after he pinned the gallantry medal on his chest, and now he is winning the internet with his heart-warming gesture.
Meena suffered 85% disability after bullets fired by the militants during an attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014 injured him. The militants ambushed a BSF convoy on August 5, 2014 near the Narsu Nalah area and Meena’s bus was part of the convoy. The 44-year-old’s citation said that he was on guard duty and his presence of mind kept the militants far from the convoy and failed their attempt to attack the 30 soldiers on board.
Reportedly, one of the bullets had pierced through Meena’s jaw due to which he is not able to speak properly. Even before he could accord the mandatory salute, Rajnath Singh went ahead, hugged him, patted him and even saw him off the dais. As per the BSF officials, the Home Minister, after pinning the medal, has to shake hands with the soldier and then the person moves ahead. According to reports, one of the senior BSF officials said –
‘What we saw today is rare, very rare. This is only in very special cases like that of Meena who has suffered 85 per cent disability after the attack. He is not able to talk and walk properly but despite this he dons his uniform with pride.’
