Nearly five years after the horrific incident of December 16, 2012, the Supreme Court finally confirmed the death sentences awarded to the four convicts. The sensational gang-rape case garnered a lot of attention from across the world, and we witnessed the entire nation coming out on the streets to protest against the terrifying incident, and demanding justice for Nirbhaya. After the SC finally upheld the death sentences yesterday. While the entire nation including Nirbhaya’s parents thanked the Supreme Court, the lawyer of the rapists called the judgment as injustice, and ‘slaughtering of human rights’.
How the advocates of the convicts reacted to the SC judgment, will make your blood boil. Advocate AP Singh, who was the defense counsel for two convicts – Akshay Thakur and Vinay Sharma – said that the top court has succumbed to the public pressure and the demonstrations that were carried out. He said that he will file a review petition once he has the copy of the judgment with him. He said –
‘Terrorists are getting relief from the judiciary. But we have full faith in the Supreme Court. All the four hail from poor background and I hope they will get justice. We will file the review petition after reading the judgment.’
Meanwhile, Advocate ML Sharma also said that a review petition would be filed, claiming that one of his clients, Mukesh Sharma, was, in fact, implicated in the case.
Well, this is not the first time that the counsels have said something bizarre and ridiculous to defend their ‘clients’. ML Sharma grabbed headlines sometime back when he insulted Nirbhaya, just in order to defend the rapists, who are his clients.
While the sentences of the four convicts were upheld, the fifth one – Ram Singh – committed suicide in prison, and the sixth one was a juvenile, who was released after he was kept in a remand home for the given period of time.
