In the latest announcement that the RBI made about demonetisation on Thursday, it said that the old Rs 500 notes would be accepted at petrol pumps and for buying airline tickets only till December 2.
Yes, you read it right. While the RBI had earlier allowed the usage of old Rs 500 notes at airline ticketing counters and fuel pumps till December 15, they withdrew it after the reports of misuse of the money.
Apparently, the decision came after there were multiple reports of misuse to launder black money. According to a report by TOI, a source said, ‘We have reviewed the situation. Petrol pumps have various options like e-wallets, mobile payments and cards. The cash situation has also improved significantly and there are enough new notes which have been introduced in the system.’
The report said that there is no reason why the old notes should continue. However, petrol pumps will continue to issue cash against debit cards.
