A video from Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district has went viral recently, and for all the wrong reasons. The video showed 14 men molesting two girls in broad daylight, who also shamelessly filmed them while they teased them. The video, for obvious reasons, has triggered an outrage ever since it was shared on social media.
Even though UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s anti-romeo squads are in place, it seems that they aren’t of much help. At least that’s what this incident shows. In the video, the group of boys can be seen passing lewd comments at the girls, taking off their dupatta, and one of them even lifted a girl. The boys are seen molesting and groping the girls while they are pleading them to let them go.
In an update in this case, police has claimed to have identified all the accused and has arrested the prime accused – Shahnawaj (20) – of Kuwakhera village of Rampur. The police said that he was produced before the court and was sent to judicial custody, while raids are being conducted to trace the other 13, who all are residents of the same village.
Police, however, said that they are yet to identify the victims in the Rampur incident, so that a complaint can be filed, and their statement can be recorded. According to the police, the prime accused said that the incident is of May 22, but the police came to know about it only on Saturday after the video went viral.
SP, Rampur, Vipin Tada said –
‘After both the women are identified, we will get their statements recorded before the magistrate and start the process of identifying persons who misbehaved with them. In the video, we have identified 14 persons. Some of them appear to be minors.’
An FIR has been registered under IPC Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to disrobe) and the Information Technology Act.
Former UP Minister Azam Khan reacted to the incident and said –
‘This is nothing unexpected. Considering the number of rapes, murders, looting incidents under this government, this is nothing unexpected…Following the Bulandshahr incident, every person should try to ensure that the women of his family stay at home.’
