Justified or unjustified? Here’s the entire story behind ‘youth tied to an army jeep’ video

A video was circulated yesterday that showed a man tied to an army jeep in Jammu and Kashmir, has been going viral since it surfaced. It’s apparently about a stone-pelter being tied in front of an army jape in Budgam during the by-polls when a mob tried to attack the security personnel at the polling booth.

Here are two sides to this story.

Former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sparked national outrage after he tweeted the video of the man tied to the army jeep, and said that it required urgent enquiry, saying that how can this be justified.

While the tweets sparked outrage amongst people and J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti sought a report from the police about the same, there is another side to the story as well.

According to media reports now, Omar Abdullah selected a particular part of the video, and tweeted it, which made it impossible to realise as to what had happened.

The video is of an incident that took place during the by-polls in Budgam in Srinagar on April 9, where only 9 ITBP personnel and J&K police officers were deployed for the security of the polling booth. Reports said that after the entire lection was over, a mob of around 500-800 stone-pelters with boulders in their hands reached the polling booth and gheraoed it. So the situation was 9 vs around 800.

Soon, the ITBP jawans realised that they will not be able to escape from the booth and were quick to send an SOS message to the Army for their help, as army is not deployed for the security of polling booths generally. The mob had threatened these nine personnel that they will be lynched to death.

The Army Company Commander was quick to react and that’s when the video comes to picture. Two vehicles – a jeep and a bus of the quick response team – were sent where ITBP jawans were about to get hijacked by the huge mob. But even when the quick response team arrived, they were just 15 to 20 in number and the mob was huge. As the Army did not want to open fire on the civilians, therefore, they got hold of one of the stone-pelters, tied him to the bonnet of the jeep, and tried to escape from the area. And that’s how they managed to escape.

Meanwhile, the youth, who was tied to the front of the army jeep, has been identified, and if reports are to be believed, he has denied being a stone-pelter. India Today reported that Farooq Ahmad Dar said that he was asking for help while he was tied to the jeep, and the army men threatened to shoot him if he shouted.

Now, it’s for the public to decide on what was justified?
