As soon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi took charge of his office, he has been repeatedly vocal about paying attention to making lives of disabled people better. From his ‘Mann ki Baat’ to rallies, he has been urging people to address the disabled people as ‘divyang’ and not ‘viklang’. But what his minister is doing is completely different. One of the UP ministers is in news, and for all the wrong reasons.
A video of Uttar Pradesh Textile Minister Satyadev Pachauri has went viral in which he is seen insulting a disabled worker at the Khadi Gramodyog Board’s Office in the Dolly Bagh locality. The UP minister paid a surprise visit to the office and was really annoyed with the dirt and filth lying around the campus. He immediately ordered to lock up the entire office, and asked all the Board employees to accompany him during the visit.
The UP minister also asked the Board’s CEO to immediately summon the sanitation workers. On meeting the sanitation workers, he met a disabled worker. He asked the worker whether he was a permanent employee or a contractual worker. After he learnt that the disabled worker was actually on contract basis, the minister told the CEO that if he’ll recruit ‘langa-loola’ workers, how he will fulfil the Swachch Bharat Mission.
The incident was recorded and later shared on social media, which then went viral. The minister said –
‘You have kept a ‘loola-langda’ (diasbled person) on adhoc. What will he do? This is the reason behind lack of hygiene here.’
On asking about the same, the UP minister clarified that he never intended to call the sanitation worker disabled, and he meant that he was weak to do the job. He said –
‘The worker isn’t disabled, he is weak. All I said was why have you employed a weak person who can’t do the job? What I am trying to say is give him a job that he can do while he is sitting. How can he do the cleaning job? I never said he must be fired.’
What do you think about the incident?
