In what came as a surprise to everyone, Anil Kumble stepped down as the head coach of the Indian cricket team on Tuesday. Two days after India’s defeat against Pakistan in the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, Anil Kumble chose to resign, and leave Indian cricket in a major crisis.
The development came in the wake of a reported rift between Anil Kumble and Team Captain Virat Kohli. Kumble took to Twitter to confirm his resignation. He wrote –
‘I am honoured by the confidence reposed in me by the CAC, in asking me to continue as Head Coach. The credit for the achievements of the last one year goes to the captain, the entire team, coaching and support staff…Post this intimation, I was informed for the first time yesterday by the BCCI that the Captain had reservations with my ‘style’ and about my continuing as the Head Coach. I was surprised since I had always respected the role boundaries between Captain and Coach. Though the BCCI attempted to resolved the misunderstandings between the Captain and me, it was apparent that the partnership was untenable, and I therefore believe it is best for me to move on…In light of these ‘reservations’. I believe it is best I hand over this responsibility to whomever the CAC and BCCI deem fit…Let me reiterate that it has been an absolute privilege to have served as Head Coach for the last one year.’

However, Kohli, on his part, denied any rift between the two. He said –
‘There are no problems whatsoever. As I mentioned before, if something is put in place as a process, I don’t see why people are creating so many speculations about it.’
As soon as the news of his resignation broke out, Twitter was in action, for obvious reasons. Here’s how Twitteratti reacted –

Removing a coach on the recommendations of a captain will set a wrong precedent. Hope that was not the case.

Among those who applied to be Team India’s coach are Virender Sehwag, Richard Pybus, Dodda Ganesh, Tom Moody and Lalchand Rajput. And the BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee consisting of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly will be taking interviews for the job.
